How To Use BitTorrent - The BitTorrent Post

January 27th, 2006 at 9:13 am by par (Uncategorized)

Why the the BitTorrent Post? Well, for several reasons really, it would help a lot of people out, BitTorrent is great and should be shared, and I have too much free time at work (not really). Many of my friends and co-workers have asked me how to get started on the non-stop bandwagon that is BitTorrent, without having to understand techie words like ’swarm’, ‘peer’, ’seed’ or ‘ratio’. So without further ado, I’d like to get to it.

  • BitTorrent is essentially a protocol, a way two computers can talk to each other, like HTTP (that thing your computer uses to talk to web pages), and you can use it to download files (like movies, games and mp3s) from the internet, and onto your computer. I will go over a quick run through, then explain each part a little more in depth. You are going to need:
    • a program to access the torrent, such as Azureus or uTorrent
    • And a Bit Torrent search engine web site which can search for torrents of the file you want
      • A torrent is a pointer to all the small parts of the file that will make up the complete file once downloaded
    azureus frog
  1. A BitTorrent (BT) client is what makes it possible to access the torrent, and begin downloading the file. There are several different BT clients, the most popular today being Azureus. That is what I will be suggesting here, it works with Windows, Linux and OSX, is simple enough to start out with and leaves you some room to grow and learn (and is also what everyone here uses.) When you head over to the Azureus download page, you’ll notice it first tells you to install something called the JRE. Nothing to fret about, there is a chance you already have it, and the Azureus download page will let you know by saying ‘java detected’ or not. If you don’t have it, no biggie, just go get it, it’s a very simple install.
    • Follow the link on the Azureus download page and download and install the JRE first (if you don’t have it), and Azureus second. Make sure to get the latest release of Azureus.
  2. The Pirate Bay

  3. The second thing you will need to do is find a torrent search engine that’s right for you (in most cases, that’s searching through as many as it takes till you find the file you want.) This is probably the tricky part about BitTorrent. While many people may know that they need a client, it can be hard to find the sites which will link you to the torrent you are looking for. For that reason, I will provide links to the top sites we use to find torrent files:

  4. Search for whatever you are looking for in one of these search engines. In our example, I will search for ‘family guy movie’. So I will go to The Pirate Bay, type in ‘family guy movie’ and hit search. It then brings me to the search results.
    Pirate Bay Search

The thing to focus on at this point is making sure you are getting the right file, as in, make sure the title saying something about what you are looking for (you don’t want to get a TV episode instead of the movie!), and more importantly, make sure you are getting the file from the best available torrent. How do you tell which is the best? By looking at the search results.

    Pirate Bay Search Results
The outlined columns specify what data on the search grid is important (other columns have been cut out of the picture.)

    • Size - This is the size of the file. Make sure you have enough hard disk space before downloading!
    • DL = Downloads - The number of times this file has been downloaded. The bigger this is, usually the better, because if many people have gotten it, it is the popular result. In the picture above, you can see the first search result has more downloads (1082) vs. the second result (630), this would lead me to believe the first result is the best file.
    • SE = Seeds - I know I said you wouldn’t have to understand techie words like this, but bear with me, it’s easy! A seed is simply someone who has 100% of the file, and is sharing it in the torrent. The more seeds the torrent has, the faster it will download. You want to make sure the torrent you are downloading from has at least 1 seed. In the picture above, you can see the first search result has more seeds (9) vs. the second result (3), this would lead me to believe the first result is the best served (fastest downloading) file.
    • LE = Leechers - Also known as ‘Peers’ (I know I said you wouldn’t have to know this either ;) ). A leecher is someone who between 0-99% of the file downloaded, and is including the parts he/she has on the torrent. When you begin downloading a torrent, you will become a leecher until you complete the torrent and seed it. With bit torrent, you become part of the torrent, sharing whatever of the file you have, the moment you become a peer/leecher. Typically, the more leechers, the better, because that means more parts of the file are available for download. In the picture above, you can see the first search result has more leechers (23) vs. the second result (8), this would lead me to believe the first result is the most available (also fastest downloading) file.

So I can conclude that the first torrent returned in the search result is the one I want to download from.

  5. Clicking on the first search result will bring you to the Pirate Bay’s download page. Click ‘Download This Torrent’. This will cause Firefox to ask you if you want to ‘open the file with’ BitTorrent (or Azureus), or if you want to save it to disk. Open the file with BitTorrent (or Azureus).
      Firefox Save

    • If this option is not available for you, select ‘Open With’ and browse to where you installed Azureus (probably c:\program files\azureus\), and select Azureus.exe.

Once open, Azureus, will ask you where you want to save the file.
    Azureus save dialogue
Select where you want to save it, and click save. You will now begin downloading the torrent. The status of the torrent is indicated on the top half of Azureus.

    • The ‘Done’ column indicates what percent of your file is done
    • the ’seeds’ column indicates how many seeds there are for this torrent
    • The ‘peers’ column indicates how many peers there are for this torrent.
    • The ‘Down Speed’ column tells you what your download speed is

When the file is complete, it gets moved to the bottom half of Azureus, and you begin seeding it for the torrent. The file is complete! YAY! Now you can start watching it, installing it, listening to it, etc..

  6. When you are seeding, there is a ‘Share Ratio’ column which indicates how much of the file you have uploaded versus downloaded.
    • Share Ratio = Amount Uploaded / Amount Downloaded

Meaning, if you have just completed downloading a whole file, and begun seeding it, your share ratio will be low. If the total you have uploaded to peers for this file is bigger than the amount you downloaded (file size itself), you get a share ratio of > 1.0. A share ratio of at least 1.0 is typically desired, because this means you have shared back to the torrent as much of the file as you have taken from the torrent. At any time (or once your share ratio reaches 1.0), you may remove the torrent from your seeds list, thereby stopping seeding of it. To remove the seed, right click on it, and click remove.
    Azureus remove seed

And that’s about it! You’ve just learned how to get started on BitTorrent!

hint: To find more torrent search engines, go to Google and search ‘bittorrent search engine’ or ‘torrent saerch’ or something along those lines :)

Because this site will be getting more traffic, I would recommend switching to a more ‘legal’ source of data. Something like http://www.publicdomaintorrents.com/ Just a suggestion as to reduce the press coverage of BitTorrent being used for JUST copywrited material. Good simple explanation, keep up the good work.

Setting up your BitTorrent client can be a rather frustrating experience for the novice. I had lots of connection and speed issues that I thought were related to my ISP that turned out to be simple adjustments in Azureus.

I found these settings at Bittorrent Forum. I cleaned them up a bit.

These adjustments should work for MOST cable and DSL connections and should provide good internet speeds while your using your BitTorrent client.

    Click > Tools > Options

    Under Connection:

Port 6881 (may be required to be opened if you have a router)
    3 max simul outbound connections

    Under Transfer

    Max global upload speed: 10
Max global download speed: 0 (unlimited)
Default max upload slots per torrent: 5
Max number of connections per torrent: 20
Max number of connections globally: 50
Ignore peers with these data ports: 0 (default)

    Files:
All default settings are fine (may adjust for performance)

    Interface:
    Default settings for PC

    IP Filter: disable

    Statistics: Disable

    Plugins:
    Disable plugin checking
Disable UPnP (if you’re NOT using it)

All other settings can be left at there default values

What I’ve found is that most newbies can figure their way through using BitTorrent, but they get all confused when the file they end up downloading is a RAR or FLAC file, or something equally as non-mainstream. Anyone know of a “How to…” that addresses what to do AFTER newbies figure out BitTorrent? I’d love to be able to just send them there instead of having to go through it all again and again and again.

May seem simple enough, but this noob cannot get Azureus to work. Something about the “listening port” having 1) “NAT error” because of my Linksys router, 2) needing a non-blacklisted port, and 3) having to disable “Block WAN Request” and 4) getting my computer’s IP address even though I’m using DHCP. Also 5) “Enter the digits after the last “.” of your computer’s IP address: Make sure that the Protocol TCP is ticked, and that the Enable box is ticked, if present:”

    That’s all.

    Dear Sirs

Malaria kills at least 3000 children a day and up to 6000 people a day in Africa and Asia.

Passing 50 to 100 microamperes of simple d.c. electrical current through infected blood disables the pathogens and stops it reproducing it was discovered in 1992.

It also works on a broad range of other viruses/bacteria including Hep-A,B,C and also quite importantly for Malaria. You may know malaria is becoming increasingly drug resistant.

See trial study for Malaria at the end below.

    BLOOD ELECTRIFICATION.
Research conducted at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, 1300 Morris Park Ave., Bronx, N.Y.10461 in New York

    SIMPLE SUMMARY OF METHOD
The current of 0.0003 to 0.001 amps is passed through electrodes of size 0.5 cm by 2 cm located over wrist artery pulse points on each wrist or same wrist.
The current direction may be reversed every 3 or 4 minutes.

    PRACTICAL DETAILED APPLICATION.
Remember it is simple electrical current nothing else that disable the virii/pathogens.In the case of the virii the electrical current stops it reproducing by altering the outer protein layer of the pathogen and the bodys immune system removes the remaining viruses.

The level of the current is very low, 0.025 amps is required to electrocute a person.

These devices only use 0.0003 amps to 0.001 amps maximum. This is much less than a Tens device.

    1 microampere is 0.000001 amps.

The practical device to neutralise Malaria inside the body consists of two 0.5cm by 2cm long electrodes wrapped in wet cotton or alternatively conductive foam attached to wrist pulse points or other major artery points and then a direct current of 300 microamperes to 1000 microamperes is passed through the electrodes and then through the blood.

(0.3 Milliamps to 1 Milliamps MAX to allow for losses through the skin. 1 milliamp=0.001 amps)

The current maybe adjusted to suit the condition or individuals. These electrodes are simply taped to the wrist artery or other pulse points where large volumes of blood are flowing.

It is important to use these particular electrode dimensions as the current density must be maintained at 4 to 9 microamperes per square millimetre of electrode.

The higher currents near 1 milliamp produce more rapid results.

Every 5 minutes the current direction is reversed to prevent possible electrolysis. The voltage required to drive this current is from 20 to 40 volts max depending on skin resistance.

Four 9 volt batteries in series would be sufficent. In poorer countries three 12 volt car batteries can be used in series. Mains adapters can also be used.

Application times vary from 20 minutes to up to an hour or more daily depending on condition.

    BLOOD ELECTRIFICATION RESULTS.
At Beck-n-Stuff and Microelectricitygermkiller a number of private individuals have tried it for a number of viral/bacterial conditions including , Malaria, Cfs, lymphomas and other Cancers with excellent results backed up by blood tests have submitted reports.

The devices are very easy to make yourself and instructions are included at the links below.

Also remember many cancers are caused by virii, bacteria and fungi and parasites as well as genetic and environmental reasons.

BTW, if you check the link, blood electrification only works in vitro. You would have to take *every drop* of blood out of your body, pass a current through it (damaging normal cells in the process) and then put it back.

That, I am sure realise, would quickly kill you.

there’s only one problem. leechers are bad. when you leech you are taking the file and just downloading it. when you seed, you are becoming another source to download from. in other words when you leech it becomes slower. when you seed the download is faster.

Hi well I’m really new to the bitorrent thing.I read the guide.I thought I understood it but I guess I don’t..First I have a dsl connection.I downloaded Azureus and downloaded some stuff,The downloads take forever no matter how big or small.after they’re done it goes to the bottom half of Az.So far so good. After this I did what I thought was right.I clicked on the stuff (that’s on the bottom of Az)and pushed the play symbol.I let this run several hours. How do I know when it’s complete?Does it tell me?After everything has been said and done,I still can’t open the file. Can’t view or anything. It says “Can’t find program that was created on”or “media can’t open file”.Please look over my steps and let me know if I’m doing all the right stuff.Thank you very much.D

Hi, I think you will find that leechers are people who download torrents and turn off uploads so they download but dont upload thus they are leeching by the way you are describing leechers I think you meen peers also really I dont think I know KILL THE LEECHERS if there was no such thing as leechers we would all have fast downloads and by turning on uploads you get faster downloads on most bit torrent clients you should limit your uploads to 80% of total upload limit most UK adsl should be 24k limit

    hope this helps
